Honduran released by Biden accused of murdering roommate with machete in Mississippi

A 21-year-old Honduran illegal was indicted “in record speed” for allegedly murdering his roommate with a machete earlier this year in DeSoto County, Mississippi.

Maberic Javier Reyes-Reyes, from Honduras, is accused of attacking his roommate with a machete and killing him on Jan. 13, 2026, in Southaven, Mississippi.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer for Reyes-Reyes on Jan. 14, following his arrest by local authorities.

The DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office announced on June 11 that a grand jury had indicted Reyes-Reyes for the brutal murder of his roommate.

According to investigators, Reyes-Reyes and his roommate had an argument inside their home which turned violent.

Reyes pulled out a machete and attacked him, prosecutors allege. Police responded to find a gruesome crime scene and the victim, an illegal migrant from Mexico, dead inside the home.

The case was investigated by the Southaven Police Department and presented to a DeSoto County Grand Jury, which returned an indictment against Reyes-Reyes for the homicide in record time.

“This indictment is a testament to the outstanding work of the Southaven Police Department and our team, who moved with urgency to ensure this dangerous criminal was brought to justice,” said District Attorney Matthew Barton. “To secure a murder indictment in less than five months is an extraordinary accomplishment.”

The case is pending in the Circuit Court of DeSoto County, and Reyes-Reyes remains in custody at DeSoto County Adult Detention Facility.

Reyes-Reyes illegally entered the United States as a minor in Texas in 2022, and was released into the country by the Biden Administration, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.

DHS officials called Reyes-Reyes a “monster” and described the crime as “barbaric,” blaming Biden’s open borders for allowing violent migrants to flood into the country.

“This illegal alien would never have been in our country in the first place if it weren’t for the reckless open border policies of the Biden Administration,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said. “ICE has lodged a detainer and will work with our law enforcement partners in Mississippi to ensure that this criminal illegal alien can never again roam our streets and threaten anyone else.”

Honduras, along with Nicaragua, Cuba and Haiti, had a massive influx of their populations cross the border during the Biden administration, based on data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. DHS estimated 5% of Honduras’ population illegally entered the U.S. in recent years.

In a social media post highlighting Honduras, DHS said Hondurans sent remittances back home “making up 27% of the Honduran economy and taking $5.8 BILLION from the American People.”
