A Mexican national facing over 20 counts related to child pornography is the latest illegal immigrant to make the news for abhorrent crimes in Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s Virginia.
The suspect, Jorge Gilberto Zamorano-Burciaga, 36, is a former Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient now accused of serious sex crimes.
He has been charged with multiple felonies, including the production and sale of child sexual abuse material, authorities said. Per the charges, the victim is under 15 years old.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Zamorano-Burciaga on Aug. 12 in Rocky Mount, Va., following a “thorough investigation.”
The FCSO announced Zamorano-Burciaga’s arrest in a Facebook post but did not offer additional details “due to the sensitive nature of the investigation and the involvement of a minor.” Authorities did not say if there is one victim or multiple minors involved.
According to jail records, he remains lodged in the Western Virginia Regional Jail in Salem, Va., without bond.

Zamorano-Burciaga has been charged with nine counts of possession of child pornography, six counts of produce/make child pornography with a child less than 15 years old, three counts of reproduce/sell child pornography, two counts of possessing obscene material using minors, and one count of reproduce/transmit/sell child pornography, the sheriff’s office said.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also lodged an immigration detainer against Zamorano-Burciaga, once again calling on Spanberger and local authorities to not release the accused child sexual predator or hand him over to ICE.
During her first days in office, Spanberger signed executive orders banning state cooperation with ICE as well as terminating 287(g) state and local agreements.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Zamorano-Burciaga illegally entered the United States at an unknown date and location.
He applied for temporary status under DACA in February 2013 under the Obama administration, which was granted in August 2013 and extended in August 2015, DHS said. His authorized period expired in October 2018.
DACA protections and work permits must be renewed every two years, according to the DACA FAQ webpage. DHS also can revoke DACA grants, and some individuals lose their status or face removal from the United States.
“Governor Spanberger’s sanctuary policies have turned the Commonwealth into a magnet for illegal aliens, putting American lives at risk,” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said. “Sanctuary politicians must abandon these America Last policies and start putting the American people first again.”
WSLS 10 News reported that FCSO’s Criminal Investigations Division executed a search warrant at a home in the Rocky Mount area Aug. 12 in relation to sexual abuse material of a minor.
Rocky Mount, Va., is a rural area in western Virginia, about 25 miles south of Roanoke, Va.
Since Spanberger took office in January, illegal immigrants have been charged with heinous crimes across the state, including murder, machete attacks and sexual assaults against women and children.
In August, ICE lodged detainers for three illegal immigrants charged with sex offenses against children, who were all being held at the same jail in Staunton, Va.
In July, ICE arrested Raul Genesis Ortiz Moran, who illegally entered the country from Mexico, after he was charged with second-degree murder and aggravated sexual battery in the death of a 2-year-old girl in Louisa County, Virginia.
In June, an ICE investigation led to the sentencing of Samuel Flores de Dios, from Mexico, to 30 years in prison on charges of production of child sexual abuse material in Fredericksburg, Va.
Other arrests this summer include Salvadoran Juan Arevalo Mendez on charges of rape and abduction in Fairfax County, Virginia; Nicaraguan Moises Domingo Rico Rosales for abduction of person with intent to defile and indecent exposure in Annandale, Va.; and Mexican Jose Nahun Aleman Hernandez who was charged with molesting a 5-year-old girl in Woodbridge, Va.
