Mahmoud Elhassan/Sudan/Attempting to Provide Material Support to a Foreign Terrorist Organization
On July 16, 2025, ICE Boston arrested Mahmoud Elhassan, a citizen and national of Sudan, in Danbury, Connecticut, following his identification as a removable illegal alien with a history of terrorism-related convictions. According to ICE records, Elhassan is unlawfully present in the United States and has been convicted of attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, along with making false statements to federal authorities.
The conviction for attempting to support a foreign terrorist group is among the most serious charges under federal law, carrying substantial penalties including long-term imprisonment and permanent inadmissibility to the United States. In Elhassan’s case, court records indicate that he knowingly engaged in conduct intended to assist or promote terrorist activity abroad. His additional conviction for providing false statements further illustrates a pattern of deceptive behavior that obstructed ongoing investigations.
These crimes fall under aggravated felonies and security-related grounds of removal, which result in mandatory detention and bar nearly all forms of immigration relief. ICE has not disclosed the length of Elhassan’s sentence, but his criminal convictions make him a top priority for removal under U.S. immigration law.
Elhassan was taken into ICE custody without incident and is currently detained in Connecticut pending removal proceedings. An immigration judge is expected to uphold his removal order based on national security concerns and the nature of his criminal record. No additional charges are pending at this time.
