Jhon Gerald Urrutia/Venezuela/Robbery
On February 5, 2025, ICE New Orleans arrested Jhon Gerald Urrutia, a citizen of Venezuela. Urrutia has been convicted of robbery and sentenced to 21 months in prison.
In a similar case, on January 23, 2025, ICE officers in New Orleans arrested Juan Misael Canales-Garcia, a 52-year-old Salvadoran national, shortly after his release from the Alabama Department of Corrections. Canales-Garcia had been convicted of first-degree kidnapping and first-degree robbery in 2007 and sentenced to 5 years and 21 years respectively for those crimes. He originally entered the U.S. unlawfully and was ordered removed by an immigration judge on March 30, 1992. Despite this order, Canales-Garcia reentered the United States multiple times and was removed on three additional occasions.
In preparation for his release from prison, ICE lodged an immigration detainer with Alabama authorities on December 10, 2024. Once in ICE custody, agents reinstated his prior final order of removal. Canales-Garcia will remain in detention pending deportation to El Salvador.
His arrest followed a history of immigration violations and serious violent offenses. He had been apprehended in Tuscaloosa County in 2005 and served time in state prison before being transferred into ICE custody. He has not obtained legal status during any of his entries and is considered a repeat immigration violator with a significant criminal history involving violent conduct.
