On February 12, 2025, ICE Los Angeles arrested Amilcar Portillo, a citizen of El Salvador. Portillo has been convicted of sexual exploitation of rape and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Comparingly, On January 15, 2025, ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Washington, D.C., arrested 46-year-old Salvadoran national Nicolas Alberto Hernandez-Lopez in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Hernandez-Lopez had previously been convicted of second-degree sexual assault in the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2019. After serving a prison sentence, he was deported by ICE to El Salvador in June 2023. Despite that removal, he unlawfully reentered the United States at an unknown time and location. ICE officers identified and apprehended him during a targeted enforcement action aimed at locating individuals who had previously been removed and had serious criminal convictions.
Hernandez-Lopez was taken into custody without incident and is now being held pending removal proceedings. He had also been encountered by U.S. immigration authorities in the past and had been issued a final order of removal prior to his 2023 deportation. He remains in ICE custody at a Virginia detention facility.
