ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Harlingen officers arrested 42-year-old Mexican national Efrain Ortiz-Perez after determining he was in the United States illegally and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Ortiz-Perez’s arrest followed a DWI case that highlighted him as a public safety concern due to impaired driving while unlawfully present in the country.

Because of his illegal status and the DWI charge, authorities have classified Ortiz-Perez as a removable alien subject to immigration enforcement.

He is currently being held in ICE custody pending removal proceedings, during which officials will seek to deport him based on both his immigration violation and the threat posed by his drunk driving offense.
