Emerson Ferreira/Brazil/Sexual Assault, False Imprisonment

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Emerson Ferreira in Brooklyn, Connecticut. The Brazil national — here illegally — faces charges of sexual assault, violation of a court order, false imprisonment.

Sexual offense charges carry severe consequences under both state and federal law, and arrests of this kind involving individuals in the country illegally draw enforcement attention from multiple agencies. Federal immigration holds are typically placed immediately, ensuring Ferreira cannot be released pending trial without ICE involvement. A separate immigration removal proceeding will determine whether Ferreira is deported to Brazil, moving forward regardless of the criminal prosecution.

Federal authorities have placed Ferreira in immigration detention pending the outcome of removal proceedings. A Department of Justice immigration court will determine whether Ferreira is deported to Brazil.
