ICE Los Angeles HSI Integrated Operations Group arrested Gerardo Gonzalez-Cortes, 29, a citizen of Mexico who is unlawfully present in the United States, on August 18. According to arrest records, Gonzalez-Cortes is charged with carrying an unregistered loaded handgun and with battery against a peace officer. He was taken into custody in the Los Angeles area and transferred to an ICE facility, where he will remain while removal proceedings advance before an immigration judge.

The firearm charge alleges possession of a loaded gun that was not lawfully registered as required by state or local law. Investigations in such cases typically rely on recovery of the weapon during a lawful stop or search, serial number and registration checks, photographs documenting the firearm’s condition, and officer testimony describing where and how it was found. If applicable, ballistics testing and magazine capacity documentation may be added to the file.

Battery against a peace officer is charged when a person intentionally uses force or offensive contact against an officer performing official duties. Prosecutors usually substantiate the offense with body worn camera footage, witness statements, and medical records or photographs showing any injury. The protected status of the victim can trigger enhanced penalties if the case results in a conviction.

During intake, immigration officers verified identity through biometrics, compiled certified arrest paperwork, and documented immigration history for presentation in court. Gonzalez-Cortes remains in ICE custody while hearings are scheduled and while any required travel documentation would be coordinated with the receiving government if a final order of removal is issued. The criminal and immigration matters proceed on separate tracks and are adjudicated independently.
