Guadalupe Cuevas-Sotelo/Mexico/Child Sexual Abuse, Attempted Rape
On July 16, 2025, ICE Salt Lake City officers arrested Guadalupe Cuevas-Sotelo, a Mexican national, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Cuevas-Sotelo has criminal convictions for child sexual abuse and attempted rape. He is currently being held in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
Both convictions—especially those involving a minor and attempted sexual assault—qualify as aggravated felonies under U.S. immigration law. These crimes result in mandatory detention and disqualify an individual from virtually all forms of immigration relief, including asylum or cancellation of removal. Offenses of this nature are prioritized by ICE for enforcement due to the danger they pose to the community.
ICE has not disclosed when Cuevas-Sotelo first entered the United States or whether he had previously been encountered by immigration authorities. Due to the severity of his crimes, he was targeted for arrest and taken into custody without incident.
Cuevas-Sotelo remains detained at an ICE facility and will undergo removal proceedings. Given the seriousness of his convictions, he is expected to be found removable and deported to Mexico following adjudication by an immigration judge.
