HSI Los Angeles, working with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Los Angeles Field Division, arrested Hakmatullah Hajizada, 31, a citizen of Afghanistan who is unlawfully present in the United States, on August 19. According to arrest records, Hajizada is charged with assault on an officer, vandalism, and driving without a license. He was taken into custody in the Los Angeles area and transferred to ICE detention, where he will remain while removal proceedings advance before an immigration judge. These are allegations, not convictions; the state case will be adjudicated under the required burden of proof.

Assault on an officer is charged when a person intentionally uses force or offensive contact against an officer performing official duties. Prosecutors typically substantiate the offense with body-worn camera footage, witness statements, and medical documentation of any injuries. Vandalism involves intentional damage or defacement of property and is commonly proved through photographs, surveillance video, repair invoices, and owner or witness testimony. Driving without a license is established via Department of Motor Vehicles records and officer observations from a lawful stop, supported by dash camera video and incident reports.

During immigration intake, officers verified identity through biometrics, documented immigration history, and compiled certified arrest paperwork for presentation in immigration court. Hajizada remains detained while hearings are scheduled and while any required travel documentation would be coordinated with the receiving government if a final order of removal is issued. The criminal and immigration matters proceed on separate tracks: outcomes in the state case are determined by the criminal court and then reflected in the immigration record, while the immigration judge addresses custody and removability under federal law.
