ICE Los Angeles HSI Integrated Operations Group arrested Jose Armondo Estrada-Mendoza, 26, a citizen of Mexico, on August 20. According to arrest records, Estrada-Mendoza is charged with spousal battery. He was taken into custody in the Los Angeles area and transferred to an ICE facility, where he remains pending removal proceedings before an immigration judge. These are allegations, not convictions; the criminal case will be adjudicated in the appropriate court under the required burden of proof.

Spousal battery statutes penalize the intentional use of unlawful physical force against a spouse or intimate partner. Investigations typically rely on victim statements, photographs of injuries, medical documentation when applicable, and officer observations recorded in incident reports. Body worn camera footage, 911 audio, and statements from witnesses or neighbors may also be included to establish the sequence of events. Courts often issue protective orders early in the process to prevent contact while the case moves forward.

Following his arrest, immigration officers completed biometric identity verification, documented Estrada-Mendoza’s immigration history, and compiled certified arrest paperwork for presentation in immigration court. The immigration and criminal tracks proceed independently: any outcome in the state case will be reflected in the immigration file but determined by the criminal court, while the immigration judge evaluates removability and custody under federal law.

Estrada-Mendoza will remain in ICE custody during the administrative process, which includes service of charging documents, custody review, and scheduling before the immigration judge. If a final order of removal is issued, officials will coordinate necessary travel documentation with the Government of Mexico and arrange transportation in accordance with standard procedures. Until then, detention continues under the current custody determination for noncitizens with pending violent offense charges.
