ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Washington, D.C. arrested Jose Luis Bazan-Canta, a citizen of Peru who is illegally present in the United States. He was taken into custody in Washington, D.C., following an investigation that identified him as a foreign national with a serious violent criminal history abroad.
According to ICE, Bazan-Canta was previously convicted in Peru for aggravated robbery, for which he served a six-year prison sentence before unlawfully entering or remaining in the United States. The offense involved violence or the threat of violence and was deemed severe enough under Peruvian law to warrant a lengthy incarceration. ICE officials determined that his criminal past and unlawful status made him a candidate for enforcement action.
Bazan-Canta is now being held in ICE custody pending the outcome of his immigration proceedings and expected removal from the U.S. Officers with ERO Washington, D.C. conducted the arrest without incident. No known additional charges are pending at this time within the United States. ICE continues to identify and detain foreign nationals who have committed serious offenses or served prison time in other countries before entering or residing illegally in the U.S.
