Oscar Jurucan/Guatemala/Sexual Assault

by G. George | May 20, 2025

On May 15, 2025, ICE officers in Newark, New Jersey, arrested Oscar Juracan, a 32-year-old Guatemalan national, during a targeted enforcement action. Juracan had entered the United States unlawfully and was convicted of aggravated sexual assault during a robbery in Hudson County, New Jersey. The conviction involved the use of force against a female victim, and he was sentenced to seven years in state prison. Following his release, ICE agents took him into custody to begin removal proceedings.

Juracan had been identified as a priority for enforcement due to the violent nature of his criminal record. Despite his felony conviction and undocumented status, local authorities released him without notifying ICE, as no detainer was honored at the time of his release. ICE later located Juracan at a private residence in Newark and arrested him without incident. He was transferred to an ICE detention facility, where he remains in custody.

He had previously been ordered removed from the United States and is now facing reinstatement of that order. His case is pending before an immigration judge, and he will remain detained while proceedings move forward.
