Rafael Gamez-Sanchez/Mexico/Vehicular Manslaughter

by G. George | June 11, 2025

Rafael Gamez‑Sanchez, a Mexican national previously removed from the United States, was recently arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a targeted enforcement operation. Authorities confirmed that he had reentered the country illegally and flagged him due to a serious criminal conviction: vehicular manslaughter under U.S. law.

ICE officers located Gamez‑Sanchez as part of ongoing efforts to identify and detain noncitizens with significant criminal histories who pose potential threats to public safety. His conviction for vehicular manslaughter—a crime that caused the death of another person—elevated his priority for immigration enforcement under federal guidelines.

After confirming that he had no lawful immigration status and had been removed previously, ICE placed a detainer on him upon arrest. He was transferred into ICE custody at a secure facility, where he will be held without bond until his immigration hearing. These types of cases typically proceed under reinstatement of removal orders or expedited removal mechanisms, depending on his prior deportation circumstances and whether he has any outstanding legal claims.

ICE continues to coordinate with relevant law enforcement partners to monitor and apprehend individuals who have reentered the U.S. unlawfully and possess dangerous criminal backgrounds. Gamez‑Sanchez’s case exemplifies the agency’s focus on removing those who have committed serious violent crimes. He will remain in detention pending the outcome of his removal proceedings.
