ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Newark officers arrested Dominican national Robert Reid Mendez Jimenez on August 13 after New York City officials released him from custody despite an active immigration detainer.

He is charged with a child predatory offense following an NYPD case that involved multiple sexual abuse counts, including sexual conduct with a child under the age of 11. Local authorities released him back into the community under sanctuary policies before federal officers tracked him down in New Jersey.

Mendez is subject to a final order of removal dating back to July 2018, issued after he entered the United States illegally and was placed in immigration proceedings. ICE used intelligence-driven operations to locate and arrest him shortly after his release, classifying him as a dangerous child predator and public-safety threat.

An ICE ERO Newark acting field office spokesman said the case “shows the real cost of ignoring ICE detainers,” emphasizing that violent offenders can walk free when local jails refuse to cooperate, and praising officers for removing the suspect from the streets.
