Roberto Carrillo Garcia/Guatemala/Driving Under the Influence

Federal immigration agents arrested Roberto Carrillo Garcia, a Guatemala national here illegally, in Bellevue, Nebraska, on charges of driving under the influence, unlawful reentry.

Impaired driving arrests involving illegal aliens have become a common intersection between local law enforcement and federal immigration enforcement. Many Wisconsin jurisdictions coordinate with ICE on such arrests, resulting in immigration detainers being placed before trial. Garcia’s DUI charge now runs in parallel with a federal immigration removal proceeding moving forward independently.

Garcia remains in ICE custody pending a hearing before a federal immigration judge. If the court orders removal, Garcia would be returned to Guatemala.
