ICE Harlingen officers arrested Rolando Hernandez-Benitez, a 48-year-old citizen of Mexico, for violating U.S. immigration law and the conditions of his prior admission into the country. Hernandez-Benitez has a serious criminal record that includes a conviction forĀ assault with a deadly weapon, a violent offense that led to his classification as a removable criminal alien.

Following his conviction, immigration authorities determined that Hernandez-Benitez had overstayed or otherwise violated the terms under which he was originally permitted to enter the United States. His arrest came as part of ongoing enforcement operations targeting individuals who present a risk due to prior violent convictions and immigration non-compliance. Hernandez-Benitez is currently being held in ICE custody and will be placed into formal immigration proceedings.

Officials have not released further details about the nature of the assault offense, but based on federal immigration law, violent felonies such as assault with a deadly weapon typically result in mandatory removal actions. Hernandez-Benitez will remain detained pending the outcome of his removal case.
