Sergio Chavira-Munoz, a 23-year-old citizen of Mexico, was arrested by ICE Denver officers on May 20 following a review of his criminal background and immigration status. Chavira-Munoz has a felony conviction for sexual assault and is currently facing additional charges including criminal impersonation and failure to register as a sex offender. These offenses were documented through prior interactions with law enforcement in Colorado, prompting ICE to issue a detainer and take him into custody upon release from local authorities.

Chavira-Munoz had previously been encountered by immigration officials, and his reoffending behavior raised significant concerns. After his felony conviction, local law enforcement flagged his noncompliance with legal obligations as a registered sex offender, including failure to provide accurate information to the state registry. He also attempted to conceal his identity during a separate incident, leading to the criminal impersonation charge now pending in local court.

Upon his arrest by ICE, Chavira-Munoz was transferred to a secure federal detention center. His case will now proceed through immigration court, where a judge will evaluate the totality of his criminal convictions and immigration violations. Until then, he will remain in ICE custody while awaiting a final determination on his removal proceedings.
