Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins/Portugal/Attempted Murder of Law Enforcement, Vehicle Assault

by G. George | January 17, 2026

On December 24, ICE officers conducting a targeted immigration enforcement operation in Glen Burnie, Maryland, identified Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, an illegal alien from Portugal, operating a van. Also present was Solomon Antonio Serrano-Esquivel, an illegal alien from El Salvador, seated as a passenger.

When officers instructed Sousa-Martins to turn off the engine, he refused and attempted to flee. Sousa-Martins then weaponized his vehicle, ramming it into several ICE vehicles before driving directly at officers in an apparent attempt to strike them. Fearing for their lives and public safety, ICE officers defensively fired their service weapons, striking the driver. Sousa-Martins subsequently wrecked his van between two buildings, injuring Serrano-Esquivel.

Officers provided immediate medical aid to both individuals, who were transported to a local hospital. Both remain in stable condition and are expected to recover. No ICE officers sustained severe injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
