Yunqing Jian/China/Fraud – False Statement
Yunqing Jian, a Chinese national and former University of Michigan researcher, was arrested in Michigan after federal investigators linked her to a scheme involving the smuggling of a dangerous agricultural pathogen and making false statements during the investigation. Jian was charged with conspiracy, smuggling goods into the United States, and providing false information to federal agents, with officials alleging she lied about her knowledge of her boyfriend’s plan to bring the pathogen into the country for research. She was held at the Sanilac County Jail while her case proceeded in federal court.
Jian ultimately pleaded guilty to smuggling-related charges and making false statements, and was sentenced to time served before being ordered removed to China. Prosecutors emphasized that her false statements hindered a national security–sensitive investigation into the unauthorized importation of potentially harmful biological material.
