DHS: Migrants from Nicaragua, Honduras flooded U.S. under Biden, siphoned billions from U.S. economy

Various reports have estimated that illegal immigrants from 100 countries flooded into the United States under President Joe Biden, but some nationalities have played a larger role in “siphoning American resources,” according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

DHS has reported that 8% of Nicaragua’s entire population illegally entered the U.S. under Biden, noting the majority of crossings occurred between February 2021 to January 2025.

Cuba, Haiti, and Honduras also had massive influxes of their populations crossing the border, according to data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“During the Biden era – 8% of the ENTIRE population of Nicaragua illegally entered the US,” DHS posted to X. “This is in ADDITION TO 7% of Cuba, 6% of Haiti, and 5% of Honduras.”

President Donald Trump campaigned on Biden’s border failures, often claiming that Venezuela emptied their jails and encouraged gang members and criminals to come to America.

That allegation stemmed from a DHS “intelligence report” from September 2022 reportedly sent to Border Patrol agents.

According to Republican Congress members who inquired about the report, DHS told agents to be on the lookout for violent criminals who Venezuela was deliberately releasing from prisons and encouraging to join caravans headed to the U.S., WLRN reported.

The Associated Press examined where nearly 2.5 million people who crossed the border illegally went once they made it into the U.S., noting it “also shows the impact of migrants from more than 100 countries in recent years appearing at the border.”

People from Venezuela and neighboring South American countries became a major presence after COVID-19, the AP reported.

Millions also fled due to the economic and political instability in the region — highlighting another reason why President Trump wanted to capture Venzuela’s corrupt leader, President Nicolás Maduro, and dismantle drug cartels operating there.

Photos and videos from the southern border speak for themselves, with DHS adding in another X post: “Remember what they did to our country.”

But this new data supports that Biden opened the flood gates for migrants from the Central American countries of Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador to head for the United States.

“Unrestrained mass illegal migration during the Biden era inflicted incredible damage on our nation,” DHS shared on X with a story from Fox News Digital. “For four years, America was flooded with third world criminals — destabilizing our communities and making Americans less safe.”

DHS also shared the data across multiple social media posts, including Instagram, Facebook and its X account. DHS said Nicaraguans sent $6.2 billion in remittances back home, accounting for 37% of the “ENTIRE NICARAGUAN ECONOMY.”

“Illegal immigration is siphoning American resources,” DHS said. “This is unsustainable, and DHS is working to end it.”

A January 2024 headline by The Dialogue also substantiated those figures: “Orozco: Nicaragua is responsible for at least 10 percent of all migration that has arrived into the Mexico-US border.”

In another social media post highlighting Honduras, DHS said Hondurans sent remittances back home, “making up 27% of the Honduran economy and taking $5.8 BILLION from the American People.”

The Trump administration continues its push to deport criminal illegal aliens, recently adding another 5,000 criminals to wow.dhs.gov, DHS said in a news release. The searchable database includes more than 30,000 criminals arrested by ICE.

Meanwhile, Democrats continue to defy President Trump, dig in their heels and deflect from the problems created by Biden’s open borders.

For more than a year, they have resisted all efforts to deport illegal immigrants, and earlier this month, targeted DHS funding with a partial government shutdown.

Several leftist lawmakers wore “F*ck ICE” pins to Tuesday’s State of the Union address, and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Michigan, and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, shouted at President Trump from their seats. More than 70 Democrats boycotted the event.

Democrats are holding DHS funding hostage by demanding ICE reforms following two officer-involved shootings in Minneapolis, Fox News Digital reported. However, ICE is already almost entirely funded through previous provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and other legislation.

In recent months, DHS has faced public backlash and bipartisan scrutiny over immigration enforcement tactics and ongoing protests, while mainstream media reports have ignored organized anti-ICE resistance efforts designed to obstruct and assault federal agents.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also has been in the hot seat, with several lawmakers calling for her to resign or for Trump to fire her. But Noem hasn’t been deterred, saying DHS remains committed to carrying out mass deportations.

During an interview with Fox News in Eagle Pass, Texas, earlier this month, Noem focused on DHS’s work to establish “the most secure border in the history of this nation.”

“Thousands of people died [at the border] because Joe Biden and the Democrats decided to cut the fence and allow an invasion to happen that partnered with the cartels to bring in unprecedented drugs and trafficking and sex trafficking, children being abused,” Noem told Fox News. “This was immediately stopped when President Trump came in.”

Noem said Democrats disregarded the real humanitarian concerns posed by the border crisis under the last administration, Fox News reported.

“Those Democrats, every day, who talk about detention centers, who talk about our enforcement operations in the United States, where were they when this crisis was going on?” Noem said. “A hundred times more people were dying here at this border because of what they were doing, and they never said a word.”
