A Dominican Republic national has pleaded guilty in federal court in New York to possessing ammunition as an unlawful noncitizen in connection with the 2025 shooting of an off-duty federal officer, according to federal prosecutors.
The plea resolves a key charge tied to a late-night shooting in Manhattan that injured a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer and prompted a multi-agency investigation.
Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, 22, entered the plea May 4 before U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska. He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 1.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Mora Nunez admitted to possessing ammunition while unlawfully present in the United States. Prosecutors said the charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Federal authorities said the case stems from a shooting that occurred on July 19, 2025, at approximately 11:50 p.m. in Fort Washington Park in Manhattan.
According to court filings, Mora Nunez fired a weapon, striking the off-duty officer in the face and right arm. Authorities said the officer returned fire, hitting Mora Nunez, who then fled the scene on a motorbike driven by another individual.
Prosecutors said Mora Nunez entered the United States without authorization and is subject to a removal order.
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said the case involved a violent attack on a federal officer and emphasized the importance of accountability in such cases.
Officials from Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection also noted the role of interagency coordination in responding to the incident and pursuing charges.
Federal authorities said the investigation involved Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the New York City Police Department.
The case is being prosecuted by the General Crimes Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
