A 23-year-old Guatemalan national is facing felony charges after allegedly abducting a 14-year-old girl from Kansas and taking her to Arizona.
It’s yet another case of a soft-on-crime judge letting an illegal child predator out on the streets. The judge in Arizona set a $50,000 cash-only bond instead of turning him over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Police in Chandler, Ariz., arrested Cristian Leonardo Caal Mucu, who is in the country illegally, in connection with the alleged kidnapping and exploitation of a 14-year-old girl from Kansas, ABC15 News in Arizona reported.

Although Arizona “banned” sanctuary cities in 2017, Chandler created sanctuary-friendly policies, joining other cities in Arizona such as Mesa, Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. This policy prohibits city employees from asking about a person’s immigration status or cooperating with federal immigration authorities unless required by law, according to arizonapolitics.net.
Caal Mucu is accused of bringing the girl to Arizona and engaging in sexual acts with her multiple times. Despite a nearly 10-year age difference, he claims she is his girlfriend.
“It was alleged that you lured a minor for sexual exploitation, which is a class 2 felony,” the judge said during his initial hearing, per court footage released by ABC15 News.
The girl had been missing since July 20 and was returned to Kansas after being rescued.
“When I texted the case agent, we got her, it was just a huge relief and I think everybody felt that,” Sgt. Aaron Lowe, who oversees Chandler Police Department’s Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit, told ABC15.
The department’s Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit responded to the Extended Stay America hotel in Chandler on July 31 after authorities tracked her location via social media to the hotel, ABC15 reported.
The Chandler Police Department’s Criminal Apprehension Unit helped make the arrest after being contacted by a Kansas sheriff’s department about the missing teen.
“We’re talking about a 14-year-old female juvenile here and she can’t provide consent to an adult male that is going to commit sex acts with her,” Lowe added.
When officers arrived at the hotel, staff confirmed a man named Cristian Leonardo Caal Mucu was registered to room 431. Police found the missing girl alone in the hotel room. Police then tracked down Caal Mucu at work and brought him in for questioning.
According to police, the girl told detectives she met Caal Mucu about two years ago through his sister when she was babysitting the sister’s child.
“She made plans with the suspect to leave with him in the middle of the night without her parents’ knowledge,” court records said.
During his arraignment, he told the judge the teen was his girlfriend and he was “saving her from an abusive family.”
The judge rejected his explanation, saying “what you did is illegal in this country.”
Prosecutors expressed concerns about the defendant being in the country illegally and having multiple identifications.
“The state views these offenses rather seriously,” prosecutors said during Caal Mucu’s initial court hearing.
Through a translator, Caal Mucu told the judge he didn’t kidnap her and he knew what he was doing.
“I knew what I was doing was a felony, and I discussed it with her, and I understand it’s a felony, and I would like to be responsible if she ends up pregnant,” Caal Mucu said.
The judge set his bond at a $50,000 cash-only bond, which he said he could pay.
“We both know the age difference but just want to let you know that she is my girlfriend and I can pay the bond as well,” Caal Mucu told the court, before asking if he could pay his bond in installments.
Earlier this week, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office told ABC15 News that Caal Mucu was still in custody but is scheduled to be released with electronic monitoring.
Sergeant Aaron Lowe emphasized that parents need to “know who your children are communicating with and spending time with.” With the amount of missing and runaway teenagers in the nation, “it just makes you wonder what’s actually occurring that we don’t know about,” Lowe said.
