A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was seriously injured and a suspect was killed Friday during targeted enforcement activity in Franklin Park, prompting school lockdowns and road closures in the area.
According to ICE, officers attempted to stop a vehicle during an operation when the driver resisted and drove toward agents. The driver struck an agent and dragged him while fleeing, the agency said. The agent, “fearing for his life,” discharged his weapon and hit the driver.
Both the agent and the driver were transported to a hospital. The driver, identified by the Department of Homeland Security as Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, was pronounced dead. DHS said Villegas-Gonzalez lacked legal status in the United States. The agent sustained severe injuries but was listed in stable condition. Officials later said the officer had been dragged “a significant distance” by the vehicle.
“We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
DHS and ICE also addressed online content surrounding immigration enforcement, stating: “Viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement not only spread misinformation, but also undermine public safety, the safety of our officers and those being apprehended.”
The incident occurred near Grand Avenue and Elder Lane, leading District 84 schools to enact a “secure” protocol. In a letter to parents, officials said all doors were locked, no one could leave or enter, and classes continued until the situation was resolved. Grand Avenue was closed in both directions between 25th Avenue and Scott Street, and the FBI said it assisted in the response.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, D-Illinois, wrote on social media that he was “aware of the troubling incident that has unfolded in Franklin Park,” adding that “the people of Illinois deserve a full, factual accounting of what’s happened today to ensure transparency and accountability.”
The enforcement action came just days after DHS announced Operation Midway Blitz, a campaign expected to involve hundreds of ICE agents conducting operations across Chicago and Illinois. Officials did not immediately confirm whether the Franklin Park case was connected to the campaign.
