ICE arrests illegal alien from Venezuela after vehicle chase north of Detroit

Federal immigration authorities arrested a Venezuelan national in Hazel Park on Monday after he allegedly fled from officers during an attempted traffic stop, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

An ICE spokesperson said agents were conducting a targeted enforcement action on Feb. 2 when they attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Edwin Romero Guttierez, who officials identified as being in the United States illegally. According to ICE, Guttierez failed to stop and instead accelerated away, creating a dangerous situation on nearby roads.

According to MLive, authorities said the vehicle was later driven to a warehouse area, where Guttierez exited the car and attempted to evade agents on foot. He was ultimately taken into custody inside the warehouse without reported injuries to officers or bystanders.

ICE provided an image from the scene that appeared to show the vehicle involved after it struck several rolling carts near the warehouse entrance.

Federal officials said Guttierez had previously been encountered by U.S. Border Patrol in 2023 after crossing into the United States illegally through the Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas. ICE did not indicate whether he had been ordered removed at that time.

Guttierez remains in ICE custody pending immigration proceedings. Officials did not release additional information regarding potential criminal charges related to the attempted flight.

ICE said the arrest was part of ongoing interior enforcement operations targeting individuals unlawfully present in the country.
