U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested a Mexican national with an extensive and violent criminal history in New Jersey on August 24. The individual, Jorge Vagas, 43, was taken into custody by Enforcement and Removal Operations Newark.
According to ICE officials, Vagas is a previously arrested criminal alien whose charges span a range of serious offenses, including aggravated assault, robbery, endangering a child, and unlawful possession of a weapon. His record also includes making terroristic threats, harassment, receiving stolen property, violating a domestic violence order, and other offenses involving abuse or neglect.
While specific dates and conviction outcomes have not been publicly disclosed, ICE classified Vagas as a public safety threat based on the nature and frequency of his criminal conduct.
Immigration enforcement officials frequently prioritize individuals with violent histories for removal, particularly those who pose risks to families and children. “ICE targets criminal aliens who are a danger to the community and have no legal right to remain in the United States,” an agency spokesperson said in a general statement about such arrests.
ICE has not yet released details about Vagas’s immigration history or whether he had previously been deported or encountered by U.S. authorities. He currently remains in ICE custody pending further immigration proceedings.
The arrest comes as ICE field offices across the country continue targeted operations to locate and detain foreign nationals with significant criminal backgrounds. The agency has emphasized that its top enforcement priorities include aliens with convictions or charges related to violence, weapons offenses, domestic abuse, and child endangerment.
