U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement is asking Miami-Dade County law enforcement not to release an illegal immigrant who pleaded guilty to a recent drunken hit-and-run crash in Miami-Dade County that critically injured an elderly woman.
Tomas Reymundo Brito, who’s in the U.S. illegally from Guatemala, hit Geraldine Byrd’s vehicle early on on August 2 after she got out of the vehicle to open a gate to her property. Byrd, 74, was pinned under Brito’s truck and in critical condition, local news reported.
Brito, 31, fled the scene on foot and was later arrested, admitting to law enforcement that he was not in the U.S. lawfully and had also been drinking before the crash.

After Brito’s arrest, ICE lodged a detainer request with the county jail where he’s being held, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.
“This criminal illegal alien from Guatemala is charged with hit-and-run after a drunk-driving accident that sent a 74-year-old woman to the hospital in critical condition in Miami-Dade County,” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement. “He should have never been allowed in our communities or on our streets.”
‘ICE is asking officials in Miami-Dade County to cooperate with us and not release this criminal from jail, and to turn him over to ICE custody so we can remove him from our country,” he continued. “Thanks to the strong leadership of President Donald Trump, ICE is unleashed to go after criminal illegal aliens like this one so that we can make America safe again.”
Brito is facing charges of fleeing the scene of a crash with serious injury and driving without a license.
