ICE crackdown in Indiana nabs over 200 illegals including truck drivers

U.S. immigration enforcement has busted over 220 illegal immigrants including over 140 driving trucks in an operation with Indiana law enforcement.

The crackdown, announced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security last week, is part of the ongoing Operation Midway Blitz in the Chicago area and was executed with the help of Indiana State Police at the Indiana-Illinois border.

In total, 223 illegal aliens were apprehended, with 146 being truck drivers and 46 of those having commercial drivers licenses, DHS said.

“Overwhelmingly these individuals have come from sanctuary states such as California and Illinois and New York,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said. “If you are here driving on our streets illegally and our highways you are endangering our citizens, and your days are numbered.”

The Trump administration has taken aim at sanctuary states issuing commercial drivers licenses to illegals who can’t speak English after a rash of fatal accidents caused by the illegal semi-truck drivers.

“Sanctuary policies like those in Illinois sadly don’t recognize borders, and ICE and the Indiana State Police have successfully arrested hundreds of illegal alien truck drivers who should not be operating on our highways,” ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons said in a statement. “In recent weeks, we have seen illegal semi-truck drivers responsible for significant loss of life across the country. This was preventable, and that is precisely why we are working to ensure this doesn’t happen in Indiana or Illinois.”

The Indiana operation came under the federal 287(g) program, which allows ICE to delegate some immigration enforcement functions to local and state law enforcement agencies.

“Indiana is the Crossroads of America, and that’s something we’re proud of — but it also means we must stay vigilant about those using our interstates for crime and thus endangering our communities,” Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said. “The safety of our state is our top priority, and we’ll keep working with our federal partners to keep Hoosiers — and Americans — safe.”
