Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow on Wednesday blasted efforts to remove criminal illegal immigrants as “security theater” following the fatal shooting in Minneapolis, ignoring the numerous Michiganders who needlessly lost their lives to folks in the country illegally.
“A US citizen was shot and killed by ICE in Minneapolis today,” the Royal Oak Democrat posted to X. “There’s no sugarcoating this; the President’s security theater just cost someone their life.
“Her family is grieving an unimaginable loss. We need a full investigation, and ICE needs the same accountability we demand from all law enforcement,” wrote McMorrow, one of three Democrats vying to replace U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Twp. “There are no exceptions.”

The post references the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, who was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer as she attempted to run him over with her vehicle, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem told the media on Wednesday Good had followed agents throughout the day, before she used her vehicle to block theirs and refused orders to move, Reuters reported.
“An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin posted to X. “He used his training and saved his own life and that of his fellow officers. The alleged perpetrator was hit and is deceased. The ICE officers who were hurt are expected to make full recoveries.”
Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey sided with what Noem described as a “mob of agitators,” with Walz claiming the incident is the consequence of “governance designed to generate fear, headlines and conflict.”
The “largest DHS operation ever” currently underway in Minnesota involves about 2,000 officers, who are focused on removing illegal immigrant “fraudsters, murderers, rapists, and gang members,” according to the agency.
Noem said Wednesday agents have made over 1,500 arrests, with some of the “worst of the worst” detailed in a media advisory the day prior.
They include Tomas Espin Tapia, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador with active warrants for murder and sexual assault, and prior convictions for robbery and extortion, as well as Mong Cheng, an illegal immigrant from Laos with convictions for homicide, vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, and assault.
Another illegal immigrant from Laos arrested in Minnesota, Kao Yang, has prior convictions for sexual assault, lewd acts with a minor, and procuring a prostitute, according to DHS.
Still others hailed from Vietnam, El Salvador, Mexico, and Liberia, with prior convictions for a wide variety of crimes, including rape, robbery, sexual assault, lascivious acts with a minor, kidnapping, armed robbery, domestic violence, criminal sexual conduct with a minor, possession of cocaine, aggravated felony robbery, and others.
It’s a similar situation in Michigan, where illegal immigrant criminals have claimed the lives and innocence of numerous residents in recent years.
Just last month, Magdalena Vail Molina, 43, was charged with driving on a suspended or revoked license causing death, as well as lying to police, after authorities allege she struck 12-year-old Fruitport Middle School student Isaac Michael Rose with her vehicle in Kentwood in August.
In March 2024, Mexican national Brandon Ortiz-Vite, 25, shot and killed Grand Rapids’ Ruby Garcia, 25, inside the woman’s vehicle alongside U.S. 31, before dumping her body on the highway and fleeing the scene in her car.
Ortiz-Vite was sentenced to 39 years in prison in November 2024.
That murder followed another in Grand Rapids in May 2023 involving illegal immigrant Luis Bernal-Sosa, who gunned down the mother of his young child, 22-year-old Leah Gomez, while she was sitting in her car with the child in the back seat. Bernal-Sosa, also a Mexican national, was sentenced to life in prison with no option for parole in April.
In May 2024, authorities allege Louis Angel Otanez-Castillo was driving a Honda Pilot that was caught on video going 70 miles per hour down South Division Avenue in Grand Rapids, just before striking 53-year-old Robert Delgado at roughly 45 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone.
Evidence put Otanez-Castillo, an illegal immigrant from the Dominican Republic with a pending deportation order, at Le Petit Chateau sports bar shortly before the deadly crash, though Otanez-Castill fled the scene.
Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker charged Otanez-Castillo with two 15-year felonies: reckless driving causing death, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death, though there’s no indication police ever arrested the suspect.
In November 2024, 72-year-old Rochester Hills pastor Stephen Singleton was also struck and killed by an illegal immigrant motorist from Columbia.
Jhadiel Portilla, 28, the alleged driver, was deported to Columbia in February, about seven months before he was eventually charged with moving violation causing death and possession of a forged license plate in September, WJBK reports.
Plenty of others have been arrested on charges of criminal sexual conduct involving minors, repeated sexual assaults, the attempted rape of children, in addition to smash and grabs, home burglaries, trafficking fentanyl and other drugs, and other traffic-related deaths.
