New polling of American voters shows they support enforcing the nation’s immigration laws and reject sanctuary policies.
According to the White House, the polls “resoundingly confirm President Donald J. Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration is massively popular with the American people.”
The polling also signals a divide on the issue between Democrats and mainstream Americans.
“From mass deportations of criminal illegal aliens to empowering ICE as they enforce our nation’s laws, Americans are rallying behind President Trump’s agenda — and Democrats’ extremism couldn’t be more out of touch,” the White House said.
According to a poll conducted by Cygnal, 73% of likely midterm voters believe that people entering the U.S. without legal permission are breaking the law. Of Democrats polled, only 48% said they believe people entering the U.S. without legal permission are doing so illegally.

The poll, conducted from January 27-28, 2026, also found 64% of overall respondents agree illegal immigration is “a very to somewhat serious problem,” while 61% of Democrats said it’s “not serious or not a problem.” Among swing voters, 71% agree it’s a problem.
The poll also found:
-
61% of overall voters support deportations
-
67% of Democrats oppose deportations
-
54% of overall voters support ICE enforcing immigration laws
-
81% of Democrats oppose ICE enforcement
-
58% of overall voters oppose defunding ICE
-
68% of Democrats support defunding ICE
“If Democrats push to shut down the government over ICE funding, midterm voters punish them even further, giving Republicans a 2-point generic ballot lead, tying Independents, and pushing swing voters further to the right,” Cygnal said, finding voters would swing to Republicans 45% to 43%.
The White House also pointed to another poll conducted in January by Harvard CAPS / Harris that it says “reveals even fiercer alignment with President Trump’s decisive action to protect our communities from criminal illegal aliens.”
The poll found 51% strongly or somewhat approve of Trump’s response to anti-ICE protests in Minneapolis.
The poll also found strong support (73%) among voters for “deporting immigrants who are here illegally and have committed crimes.”
In a hit to sanctuary policies, the survey found over two-thirds of voters “agree local officials should turn over jailed undocumented criminals and cooperate with federal immigration authorities.”
Sixty percent said they think Democratic officials are “encouraging resistance” to ICE and 57% say they don’t support officials doing so.
“These results expose the extremism of the Radical Left: While Democrats fuel lawlessness and chaos, everyday Americans stand squarely with President Trump to deport criminals, reclaim sovereignty, and restore safety,” the White House said.
