A Bangladeshi immigrant who was deported in 2019 but then illegally reentered the country under Biden has been indicted for murdering his sister-in-law in Florida.
Akbor Miah, who uses the alias Shahidul Islam and was charged under that name, is accused of killing his sister-in-law, Monica Islam, in May 2025.
Prosecutors allege he shot her in the head in his car shortly after leaving a convenience store in Lake County, Florida, and then left her on the side of a road.
After the alleged murder, Miah fled to the sanctuary state of New York. He was arrested by U.S. Marshals on May 6 and extradited to Florida to face charges for first-degree murder.

Miah (Islam), 44, was indicted by a Lake County grand jury on a premeditated first-degree murder charge for the May 2, 2025, shooting death of his sister-in-law.
However, the case illustrates the broader border failures under Biden and the nation’s broken immigration system, said State Attorney Bill Gladson of the Fifth Judicial Circuit during a recent news conference.
Gladson’s office announced that it is seeking the death penalty, citing the severe nature of the crime and its impact on the victim’s family.
“What makes this case so tragic, aside from the awful terrible loss of innocent life, is that this crime was completely preventable,” Gladson said. “Islam was in this country unlawfully at the time he killed Monica. For more than half a decade, he had been in and out of the immigration bureaucracy.”
The suspect was deported and came back illegally, got arrested and prosecuted, and was put on probation instead of being deported. He stopped reporting and absconded, and within two years “we have a victim here in Lake County who was innocently killed.”
According to News 6 Orlando, prosecutors in Florida are seeking the death penalty in the case under a Florida law applies to certain capital murder cases involving people who are in the country illegally.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also lodged a detainer against Miah (Islam) and wants custody of him following his criminal prosecution.
Miah was allowed into the country in 2016 under the Obama Administration. ICE arrested him in February 2018, and an immigration judge issued him a final order of removal in November 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
He was deported in January 2019 under the first Trump Administration. He then illegally re-entered the country, which is a felony, and was released by the Biden Administration on March 19, 2022.
DHS shared news of his arrest, adding a woman is dead in a “completely PREVENTABLE tragedy caused by reckless open border policies.”
State officials released additional details of the murder investigation during a news conference on July 8. Monica Islam, who lived in Eustis, left a convenience store where her daughter worked in the early morning hours of May 2, 2025.
Around 7 a.m., a passerby saw a body on the side of the road in nearby Mount Dora, located about 30 miles northwest of downtown Orlando. Islam was found with a gunshot wound to the head, Gladson said.
The victim was last seen on surveillance footage walking out to Miah’s (Islam) vehicle. His car was also caught on camera in the immediate area where her body was dumped.
Gladson said authorities discovered he made a lot of “suspicious” searches online on the morning of the killing, Fox News Digital reported.
Detectives later uncovered bloodstains matching Islam’s DNA in Miah’s car, along with a bullet lodged in the passenger door and a shattered passenger window.
Investigators believe an ongoing dispute over some property in their home country of Bangladesh led to the killing, News 6 reported.
Gladson said Miah then rented a car and drove to New York City. He was located and arrested in a joint effort between local, state and federal law enforcement partners.
He had been off the radar for what appears to be four years, using aliases and traveling all over the place, Gladson said, adding, “Completely off the radar, yet capable of committing murder, and that’s because the system failed. It wasn’t working and, in fact, frankly was broken.”
Although he was a suspect in Monica Islam’s murder, Miah (Islam) didn’t get arrested right away on the charges in Florida. He had a federal immigration warrant out for his arrest for absconding.
After being prosecuted and sentenced for his unlawful entry into the U.S., Miah (Islam) was extradited back to Lake County. He is currently being held without bond at the Lake County Detention Facility, Fox News reported.
