Contrary to some reports, an illegal immigrant who tried to flee from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ran into an Amazon warehouse in Hazel Park, resulting in his arrest inside the building.
Despite news reports and social media shares presenting it as an “ICE raid at Amazon,” ICE arrested Edwin Romero Gutierrez, a Venezuelan national, following a targeted traffic stop, according to local reports.
ICE said officers attempted to stop Gutierrez’s vehicle when he sped away and almost collided with multiple vehicles. He drove into the parking lot of the warehouse, then reportedly exited his vehicle, fled on foot and left the car in drive.
Metro Detroit News shared a video of the incident, reporting that ICE and other federal agents entered the Amazon facility on 10 Mile Road in Hazel Park on the morning of Feb. 2.
After Gutierrez ran inside the build, ICE officers asked security staff for permission to enter the facility and arrested him.
According to ICE, Gutierrez was previously arrested by Border Patrol in 2023. He crossed the border illegally in the Rio Grande Valley without inspection or parole by an immigration officer. Gutierrez remains in ICE custody pending further immigration proceedings.
Hazel Park police and ICE officials confirmed the arrest to CBS News. Police said they received a call from an ICE officer at about 11:08 a.m., and the man was taken into custody before local authorities arrived.
Hazel Park is a working-class suburb of Detroit near Ferndale and Royal Oak.
ICE has also reportedly been sighted near Canton, Royal Oak and other cities in Southeastern Michigan.
The video quickly circulated on social media, which spread more misinformation about the incident.
One video clip included the caption: ICE Raided an Amazon warehouse in Hazel Park for the second time this month. Amazon collaborated with ICE and allowed them access to the facility.
In another post on X by World Socialist Web Site, a coworker was on video saying, “If it was ICE chasing them here, I think that’s wrong because they’re intimidating everybody that works here.”
