Clashes erupted Saturday as nationwide “No Kings” protests turned violent in several sanctuary cities, with federal officers assaulted and dozens arrested, authorities said.
In Los Angeles, roughly 1,000 rioters surrounded the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building and nearby Metropolitan Detention Center, hurling rocks, bottles and cement blocks at officers, the Department of Homeland Security reported. Two federal officers were struck by cement blocks and received medical treatment.

“Two rioters have been arrested for assaulting federal law enforcement — a felony and a crime,” DHS stated in a post on X. “Law and order will prevail.”
Los Angeles police declared an unlawful assembly and issued dispersal orders as demonstrators attempted to tear down a chain-link fence near the facilities. Attempting to disperse the crowd, LAPD used tear gas, pepper balls and other non-lethal measures. LAPD officials said 74 or 75 people were arrested, mostly for failing to disperse. The day’s events began with a march from Pershing Square where demonstrators were seen waving the Hamas flag and burning the United States flag, before events inevitably escalated.
Similar tensions flared in the Chicago area, a longtime sanctuary jurisdiction. Federal agents faced confrontations near an ICE processing facility in Broadview, where past protests have involved vehicle rammings and assaults on officers. DHS has previously described some demonstrators there as rioters who blocked entrances and damaged property.

In Portland, Oregon, another sanctuary city, ANTIFA members have again targeted the federal building, this time breaking through the gate and burning flags. Local reports indicate that 26-year-old Isiah A. Lee was arrested for Criminal Trespass, though Portland has a history of quickly releasing rioters without pursuing prosecution.

While this coordinated “No Kings” event was supposedly a show of force against perceived authoritarianism. Yet, the violent authoritarianism of gangs like Latin Kings – allowed to rule the streets through terror and bloodshed – remains notably unacknowledged.
Sanctuary politicians offered limited comment, with some urging calm yet still criticizing the administration. The incidents echo prior flare-ups typically seen before elections. As of Monday, DHS has not released updates on officer conditions or additional charges in Los Angeles.
