An officer was shot late Friday night outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, during a suspected coordinated attack involving multiple armed individuals, according to local and federal authorities.
The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on July 4. Officers from the Alvarado Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious person near the ICE facility, which holds individuals awaiting deportation or charged with violating immigration law.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, one officer attempted to make contact with an individual who appeared to be armed. Multiple people then allegedly opened fire. The officer was struck in the neck and flown to a nearby hospital. He has since been treated and released.
Several suspects attempted to flee the scene but were taken into custody. Authorities have not released how many individuals were arrested or whether charges have been filed.
The Department of Homeland Security said a group of approximately 15 individuals allegedly slashed tires on federal vehicles and vandalized security cameras at the site. The department has not released further details on the suspects’ motives.
