Texas sues left-wing Latino voter group for registering illegals to vote

The state of Texas is suing a left-wing Latino voter registration group, alleging it registered illegal aliens to vote in elections.

Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the lawsuit on Monday against the JOLT Initiative, which bills itself as a nonprofit “civic participation” group for Latinos in Texas.

The lawsuit asks a district court to revoke the organization’s corporate charter “on the ground(s) that the nonprofit corporation systemically, knowingly, willfully, deliberately, and recklessly misuses individuals and Volunteer Deputy Registrars (“VDR”) to acquire and submit unlawful voter registration applications that violate the Texas Election Code and undermine the State’s democratic processes.”

Paxton’s office said its investigation found that JOLT Initiative put operatives outside of Texas Department of Motor Vehicles locations “to recruit and solicit individuals to submit unlawful voter registration applications.”

“The left constantly tries to cheat and rig elections because they know they can’t win honestly. Any organization attempting to register illegals, who are all criminals, must be completely crushed and shut down immediately,” Paxton said in a statement. “JOLT is a radical, partisan operation that has, and continues to, knowingly attempt to corrupt our voter rolls and weaken the voice of lawful Texas voters. I will make sure they face the full force of the law.”

JOLT Initiative said Monday it filed a lawsuit in response seeking a preliminary injunction against Paxton’s suit, which it called an “unconstitutional and retaliatory campaign.”

“Let the record show that the Texas Attorney General is using the power of his office to silence Latino voters,” JOLT Initiative Executive Director Jackie Bastard⁩ said in a statement. “After we challenged his first unconstitutional attempt to intimidate us, he escalated his attack by moving straight to the corporate ‘death penalty’, seeking to revoke our ability to exist. The state’s quo warranto petition is explicitly retaliatory, citing our voter registration activity and prior lawsuit as a reason for its filing.”

According to Influence Watch, the JOLT Initiative has received grants from the anti-fossil fuel advocacy group Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice, which is funded by the Windward Fund that’s part of the liberal dark-money network of Arabella Advisors.
