Two ICE agents hospitalized after car-ramming attack in Arizona

Two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were hospitalized Thursday after a driver rammed their vehicle during an attempted traffic stop in Avondale, Ariz., according to the FBI.

Federal investigators said the incident began when ICE agents attempted to stop a vehicle that refused to pull over. The driver fled, returned to a residence, and then rammed into the ICE vehicle with both agents inside.

The FBI Phoenix Field Office confirmed it has opened an investigation into an assault on a federal officer. “The results will be turned over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office – District of Arizona for a charging decision,” the bureau said in a written statement.

Both ICE agents were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They were later released and are expected to recover. The Avondale Police Department said it was not part of the enforcement operation but provided assistance at the scene following the crash.

FBI officials said the investigation remains active as agents review evidence and witness statements. The case will be prosecuted federally, as assaults on ICE personnel fall under the jurisdiction of U.S. statutes protecting federal officers.

ICE confirmed the agents were conducting a targeted enforcement operation at the time of the incident, which is part of the agency’s broader national campaign focusing on violent offenders and previously deported criminal aliens. The agency said it would not release additional details until charges are filed.

The incident comes amid a rise in violent confrontations involving immigration officers nationwide. Homeland Security officials reported earlier this month that assaults against ICE personnel have increased by more than 1,000 percent since immigration enforcement operations ramped up under President Trump’s renewed directives.

The FBI said findings from the Arizona case will be submitted to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona once the investigation is complete.
