Two illegal migrants charged after Dallas drive-by shooting leads to death of unborn baby

Two illegal migrants in Dallas face a slew of felony charges, including capital murder, after shooting at a car and striking a pregnant teen, which led to the death of her unborn baby.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed the two suspects, Keyner Ariel Calero Jiron, 20, and Yeremy Zapata Aleman, 17, are in the country illegally.

ICE lodged immigration detainers against them, and they both face deportation plus pending state charges.

The incident unfolded around 12:40 a.m. May 3 following a verbal and physical altercation outside a 7-Eleven gas station in Pleasant Grove, a residential neighborhood in southeastern Dallas, police said.

The suspects chased after a vehicle and shot at it, striking the pregnant teen and her unborn baby. Hours later, they led Dallas police on a chase after officers attempted a traffic stop.

Calero Jiron, the driver, is a Nicaraguan national who entered the country under President Joe Biden. Aleman, from Honduras, was a passenger in Calero Jiron’s car.

The pregnant teen, identified as Natalie Rossainz by KWTX 10 News, was riding in her boyfriend’s vehicle in the front passenger seat. Her boyfriend and his juvenile sister were not injured, an arrest affidavit states.

The 17-year-old pregnant victim was shot through her pelvis but survived. The baby, who was still in the womb, was struck in his hand and died after an emergency cesarean section, KDFW FOX 4 reported.

The victim’s grandmother, Cynthia Trevino, spoke to FOX 4 News on Monday and said her 17-year-old granddaughter was 22 weeks pregnant and is still recovering but struggling to walk.

“It was a blessing for us, and they took it away from us,” Trevino said of the baby. “I’m very angry. …They’re going to live with that for the rest of their life. They destroyed their own life because they’re young.”

KWTX 10 News reported Calero Jiron allegedly pushed another man as he walked out of the store. The man got into his vehicle and pulled up next to Calero Jiron, rolled down his window and cursed at him, according to the arrest affidavit.

As the young man drove off, the suspects followed and shot into the SUV, police said.

A witness said one of the vehicle’s occupants pointed a gun at the car and they saw a green laser inside the vehicle before hearing gunshots.

Security camera footage from the gas station showed the confrontation between Calero Jiron and the driver before the shooting, arrest records state. Surveillance footage also shows gunshots being fired at the victims’ vehicle as both cars traveled on Buckner Boulevard.

A second vehicle in the vicinity of the shooting was hit by gunshots and sustained damage. The driver was unharmed.

Hours after the shooting, the suspects also attempted to evade arrest and led police on a chase before crashing out, KDFW FOX 4 reported last week.

Calero Jiron sped away from the officers and ran multiple stop lights before police lost sight of the vehicle. About 30 minutes later, police spotted Calero Jiron, who attempted to flee again before crashing his car into a curb.

Police said both suspects shot at the SUV. Authorities found a handgun and cocaine on Calerio Jiron and ecstasy in his vehicle.

The targeted vehicle had its back window shot out and as well as a back right window and rear tire, FOX 4 reported.

Calero Jiron, of Nicaragua, was encountered by U.S. Border Patrol in the Rio Grande Valley in December 2022 after unlawfully entering the U.S. from Mexico. Aleman is a citizen of Honduras but ICE did not release details about his case, FOX 4 reported.

Calero Jiron was charged with five felony aggravated assault charges, evading arrest, possession of cocaine, unlawful carrying of a weapon, and capital murder due to the infant’s death.

Zapata Aleman was charged with five felony aggravated assault charges, possession of cocaine and capital murder.

If convicted on capital murder, each suspect will face the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

“I don’t care what they do to them,” Trevino told FOX 4. “If they give them the death penalty, it isn’t going to bring the baby back.”

Both remain behind bars at the Dallas County Jail with bond set at more than $1 million, Fox News reported on Wednesday on “America’s Newsroom.”
