On May 9, 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of Abymahel Torres-Arriaga, a 36-year-old Mexican national who was living unlawfully in the United States. Torres-Arriaga was taken into custody in Red Wing, Minnesota, by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations officers following his release from local custody. He was previously convicted of controlled substance crimes involving the sale of heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl.

According to records from the Goodhue County District Court, Torres-Arriaga was arrested in 2023 after a multi-agency narcotics investigation. Authorities had identified him as a mid-level distributor operating in southern Minnesota. A controlled buy and subsequent search warrant led to the seizure of a significant quantity of illegal narcotics, including fentanyl-laced pills and multiple grams of heroin and methamphetamine. He was charged with multiple felony-level drug offenses and pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree sale of a controlled substance.

Torres-Arriaga served time in a Minnesota correctional facility before being transferred to ICE custody upon completion of his sentence. ICE had previously issued a detainer, which was honored by state authorities. He had no lawful immigration status and had not applied for relief prior to his arrest.

Torres-Arriaga is currently in ICE custody pending removal proceedings. He is expected to be deported to Mexico following the reinstatement of a prior removal order issued in 2020.
