Four illegal immigrants have been identified and arrested in connection with a July shooting that killed an 18-year-old refugee in Jacksonville, Florida.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced on Monday that the four suspects, including three teenagers, are now in custody. They are accused of being involved in the July 16 murder of an 18-year-old legal refugee at Drew Park on the city’s south side.
JSO said in a news release that the victim, 18-year-old Marvin Oporta Garcia, was found “with multiple gunshot wounds.”
Oporta Garcia died of his injuries before medics could get him to the hospital, JSO said.
The sheriff’s office identified the suspects as Jose Hernandez Bermudez, 16, from Nicaragua; Kleber Martinez, 17, from Honduras; Daniel Ramirez Mato, 18, from Cuba; and Russell Oliva Reyes, 21, from Honduras.
According to initial reports from Action News Jax, Oporta Garcia was found by a passerby at about 1:30 a.m. July 16 near Drew Park.
JSO said Homicide Unit detectives launched an immediate investigation, but they did not make any arrests for nearly a month.
On Saturday, Aug. 15, authorities arrested Hernandez Bermudez, Martinez and Ramirez Mato. Oliva Reyes was arrested the next day.

The sheriff’s office did not release specific charges or additional details on how they tied the suspects to the murder or where they were apprehended.
“We will continue working to seek justice for Oporta Garcia and our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a statement.
The suspects were booked into Duval County Jail and JSO notified federal authorities to lodge immigration detainers, the sheriff’s office said.
In the panhandle area of Florida, Shaquiel Sheldon Williams, an illegal immigrant from Jamaica, was recently arrested for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after stabbing two people at a Burger King.
According to local reports, the alleged attack took place on Aug. 13 in Panama City Beach.
Williams reportedly began arguing with employees at the Burger King after he refused to pay for his food.
Workers at the restaurant tried to defuse the situation before Williams allegedly stabbed two of them and then fled on foot. Police arrested him the same day.
Both victims were taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also lodged a detainer with the Bay County Jail following his arrest.
Williams entered the United States in December 2023 after he was lawfully admitted by the Biden administration. He remained in the country illegally after he overstayed the authorized period in January 2024, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.
“If it weren’t for the Biden Administration letting him in, he never would have been in our country and this attack never would have happened,” DHS officials said. “ICE will work with our partners in Florida to make sure this thug is removed from our country after he faces justice.”
