North Carolina: ICE vehicle ramming incident leads to federal charges against illegal alien

An illegal alien in North Carolina involved in a vehicle-ramming assault while trying to escape U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been hit with federal charges.

Milton Ermilo Arreaga Roblero, 23, was charged with forcibly assaulting and impeding agents of ICE related to the Dec. 2 incident in Morrisville, N.C. He is accused of allegedly ramming his vehicle into agents’ vehicles and narrowly missing an ICE agent while attempting to flee.

According to the criminal complaint, Roblero tried to drive off after ICE agents attempted to stop his vehicle during an enforcement operation. He was taken into custody after a brief pursuit during which he drove over a curb and through a landscaped area in a parking lot.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced the charges on Tuesday.

“Assaulting a federal officer is an attack on the rule of law itself,” said U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle. “When someone allegedly drives a vehicle to threaten or endanger ICE agents, we treat it with the utmost seriousness. We have zero tolerance for conduct that puts our officers or the public at risk, and this office will take every lawful step to protect our families, officers, and communities.”

North Carolina news outlet ABC11 I-Team obtained video footage from the chaotic scene that shows the car up over a curb.

Authorities claim Roblero tried to ram federal agents’ vehicles as they attempted a traffic stop around 10 a.m. at a Morrisville shopping plaza last Tuesday, Dec. 2.

ABC11 reported Roblero was not the intended target but still attempted to flee. ICE agents said Roblero is illegally in the country.

Immigration agents were actually looking for the owner of the vehicle, Maynor Godinez-Mendez. Godinez-Mendez is not in custody but has a deportation order for removal, ACB11 reported.

According to the criminal complaint, Roblero initially stopped but then he “suddenly backed into one agent’s vehicle and drove into four different ICE vehicles” trying to escape.

The complaint further alleges that he narrowly avoided hitting one of the agents who was standing outside their car. The agent had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit by the vehicle.

Agents arrested Roblero after he attempted to flee. He allegedly drove over the curb, through a landscaped area and then collided with a civilian’s vehicle.

Roblero is charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers and faces maximum penalty of twenty years in prison if convicted.

The FBI Charlotte shared news of the charges on social media and said it helped with the investigation. The agency said it’s working with ICE on investigations in the Tar Heel state.

“When a federal agent is attempting to make a lawful arrest, there is no excuse to respond with violence,” said James C. Barnacle Jr., the FBI Special Agent in Charge in North Carolina. “The FBI will continue to work alongside our law enforcement partners to support illegal immigrant enforcement operations in North Carolina.”

ABC11 reported that ICE agents said the traffic stop was part of a normal ICE operation and wasn’t related to Operation Charlotte’s Web in Charlotte, N.C. Morrisville is a suburb of Raleigh, N.C., and roughly 160 miles from Charlotte.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Operation Charlotte’s Web on Nov. 15 as part of the Trump administration’s nationwide deportation effort.

The surge of Border Patrol agents to North Carolina resulted in more than 425 arrests in the Charlotte area, according to an update in early December from DHS and reported by Axios and WCNC Charlotte.

Things have been quieter in the last week or so, as Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino and his agents have moved on to Louisiana.

Bovino has called out North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein for contributing to the violence against federal agents. Stein criticized the tactics and conduct of Border Patrol agents, and wrote a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Nov. 21 saying the operation “recklessly jeopardized public safety and created havoc in our communities,” Queen City News reported.

Last Friday, Dec. 5, a twice deported illegal immigrant from Honduras with a criminal history was arrested after stabbing a man on Charlotte’s Blue Line light rail.

Bovino shared a post on X from Stein regarding the attack, saying, “Gubner, you make ZERO mention of the fact the perpetrator was an ILLEGAL ALIEN. The blood of innocents is on you. We’ve shown and told you for weeks now, yet you continue choosing illegal aliens over Ma and Pa America.”
