A Honduran illegal immigrant with a deportation order from 2016 was arrested by immigration officials following a crash that killed an 8-year-old girl in Idaho.
Police in Boise, Idaho, identified Elvin Ramos-Caballero as the driver who struck and killed Mora Gerety and contacted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He had an active federal warrant from ICE for failure to appear for an immigration hearing, police said.
Ramos-Caballero crossed the Texas border illegally in 2015 as an unaccompanied minor and was released into the U.S. the next month, authorities said.
Theo Wold, former Idaho solicitor general, is vocal about immigration policy on his X account, sharing that Boise police contacted ICE and turned Ramos-Caballero over to their custody because they had to.
“Why? Because Idaho passed a law banning sanctuary cities and forcing local law enforcement to cooperate with immigration enforcement,” Wold wrote on X earlier this week.

“Democrats all over the country—including the Governor-elects of New Jersey and Virginia—have made it clear that they want to stop the police from working with the feds to deport illegal aliens. If they had it their way, Mora’s killer would have been released back into the community.”
The young girl was struck by a vehicle as she crossed the street in Boise just before 4:45 p.m. on Nov. 11, Boise Police Department said in news release.
Paramedics arrived on the scene and rushed Gerety to a nearby hospital, but she died a few hours later, the Idaho Statesman reported while not mentioning the driver’s name or his immigration status until the end of the story.
The Ada County Coroner ruled her death a result of multiple blunt force injuries and the manner of death as an accident.
“This is a parent’s worst nightmare, and tonight our hearts go out to the victim’s family, friends, and her community at large,” Boise Police Chief Chris Dennison said in a statement following the collision.
Boise Police officers responded to a vehicle-pedestrian crash around 4:40 p.m. on Nov. 11. Gerety was struck and killed by a pickup truck in the intersection of West Ada Street and Harrison Boulevard in Boise’s North End.
“Traffic was backed up on Harrison, and the collision occurred when both the driver and the pedestrian entered the intersection with the driver attempting to turn right to head north on Harrison,” officials said per WHAM 13 News.
Boise Police ran a check of the National Crime and Information Center, which showed Ramos-Caballero had an outstanding federal warrant issued by ICE. Officers notified the agency and ICE agents took custody of Ramos-Caballero.
The Boise Police investigation is ongoing, but there have been no additional charges. Ramos-Caballero remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.
The Daily Wire reported Ramos-Caballero crossed the border illegally into Hidalgo, Texas, in September 2015 as an unaccompanied minor. He was transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services, which released him into the country the next month.
When Border Patrol agents encounter illegal migrant children without parents, they contact HHS, which typically finds a sponsor for them in the United States. Those children must still go to immigration court for judges to decide their cases.
In Ramos-Caballero’s case, he failed to appear at his 2016 immigration hearing, where the judge ordered his deportation, The Daily Wire confirmed with ICE and shared on social media.

The Boise School District said that Mora Gerety attended Washington Elementary School, which is located near the scene of the crash.
Community members also held a candlelight vigil for the young victim, and created a memorial continues at site of the crash, CBS2 News reported.
Several social media posts offered condolences, while others highlighted the driver’s immigration status and lack of media attention.
In another X post, Wold wrote: “Zero stories in the New York Times. Zero stories in the Washington Post. Zero stories in the Associated Press. You’ll see thousands of stories in the mainstream media about the evils of President Trump’s deportations. But not a single national outlet has covered the story of a family being separated forever by somebody who had no right to be in our country.”

A Facebook page titled Justice for Alex & Victims of Violent Crime wrote: “I bet this story did not make national headlines? So tragic and totally preventable!”
Lauren McLean, described as “the woke Democrat mayor of Boise, Idaho,” by David Harris Jr., also issued a statement without mentioning the driver.
“I remain steadfast in my belief that every child in Boise should be able to run out their front door, safely explore their neighborhood and make it home for dinner,” McLean shared in a statement posted on Facebook. “I’m committed to doing all we can to achieve this vision.”
Another social media post from Media Right News listed the Mayor’s efforts to protect illegal immigrants, including a declaration as a “Welcoming City” and certification by the George Soros-linked Welcoming America organization.

The post fired back at McLean, saying “He never should have been here. He never would have stayed here if Boise weren’t run by a mayor who brags about making our city a certified ‘Welcoming City’ for illegal immigrants.”
