Massachusetts: Chinese national arrested for illegally voting using another immigrant’s identity

A Chinese national has been arrested for alleged voting fraud during the 2024 election, federal officials announced on Wednesday.

In a complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts, it’s alleged that Yupeng Sun, 33, submitted a voter registration and ballot using another Chinese national’s name and information.

“Sun allegedly submitted an online voter registration through the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website impersonating another Chinese national residing in Massachusetts with legal permanent resident (“LPR”) status” on October 10, 2024, the complaint says. “On Oct. 31, 2024, Sun allegedly continued to impersonate the other Chinese national and submitted an early voting ballot at Malden City Hall for the 2024 U.S. presidential election.”

After using the victim’s name and information to illegally register to vote and cast a ballot, it’s alleged that Sun then left anonymous tips with Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services saying the victim had “illegally voted.”

Prior to the election in April 2024, Sun also fraudulently submitted immigration forms impersonating the victim and his wife to USCIS “requesting to abandon their LPR status,” leading to them having their green cards taken.

Sun if facing a charge each of fraudulent voter registration and fraudulent voting. Both could carry up to five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines, if convicted.

U.S. Attorney’s Office said Sun could face deportation after serving a sentence.

Dhillon on Tuesday announced the Civil Rights Division, which she heads, will conduct poll monitoring during the primaries in Wyoming and Florida “to ensure transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law.”

The Trump administration has warned of election security, particularly with electronic voting machines and ballot-counting systems, including national security risks from China obtaining voter files of 220 million U.S. citizens.

“That information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, political party preferences, and other sensitive data that would be needed to register to vote, and engage in other nefarious activities,” the White House says. “This data loss presents an unprecedented election security nightmare. The intelligence even shows that China assigned a data exploitation unit specifically to this new project.”

The administration has also estimated there are around 278,000 non-citizens on voter roles across the country/

“Since Democrat states refused to share their voter files, the real number is actually much higher—yet even this limited analysis found more than a quarter of a million foreigners illegally registered to vote,” the White House said.
